The flexibility of our program allows students to choose from our diverse course offerings in literature, communication, film and media studies, rhetoric, linguistics, and writing and to build a portfolio of work that prepares them for a range of careers. Our program lets students choose courses that best fit their scholarly and professional goals. The B.A. in English prepares students to read, write, and think, and it gives students the tools to explain to potential employers what kinds of careers they are prepared to take on.

Both fields deal with various ways in which human beings have tried to understand life’s big questions: about meaning, justice, virtue, wisdom, the self and identity, and the nature of reality.  Our courses attend to the study of classic texts and also to lived experiences in the contemporary world.  Our department is a lively learning community that fosters critical and creative thinking in courses, symposia, conversations, and close work with renowned faculty.
